Belgian Royalty and Cricketer Virender Sehwag team up for Child Rights
MUMBAI, 10 November 2017 – Their Majesties the King and the Queen of the Belgians advocated for children’s right to play and learn during a cricket match with cricketer Virender Sehwag and boys and girls from two Mumbai schools at Mumbai Maidan Oval, India.
“No matter the country we live in, we have to ensure that children grow up in a safe family environment. We need to protect girls and boys from all kind of violence and harmful practices and prevent child maltreatment. As a UN Special Advocate, I attach importance to the Right to Education for all children,” said Her Majesty.
Girls are particularly vulnerable in India. Nearly one fourth of 20-24 year-old-women[1] were married before they turned 18. Close to 12 per cent of girls are not attending upper primary school. [2] Around 4.5 percent of women age 15-19 experienced sexual violence.
“It is high time we empower our women and girls, and sports is a wonderful way of doing so,” said cricketer Virender Sehwag following the cricket match attended by Their Majesties. “While speaking with the children we learnt that UNICEF’s work with sport is grounded in its mission to ensure that every boy and girl irrespective of their ability and background have the right to play and participate in sports in a safe and healthy environment.”
Her Majesty Queen Mathilde had a closed-door meeting with school children from Maharashtra who discussed personal safety, the importance of life skills and adolescent empowerment, especially the empowerment of girls and prevention of child marriage.
“Child marriage negatively influences children’s rights to education, health and protection. These consequences especially impact the girl directly, but also her family and community. Girls and boys married as children more likely lack the skills, knowledge and job prospects needed to lift their families out of poverty. They are unable to contribute to their country’s social and economic growth,” said Her Majesty.
During her stay in Maharashtra, Her Majesty the Queen inaugurated a song about hand-washing. Coordinated by the University of Hasselt in collaboration with Belgian students and volunteers, the song was donated to UNICEF to serve as another creative tool to generate awareness around the already successful Swachh Bharat Mission (Clean India Mission) in the country. Queen Mathilde underlined the importance of good hygiene practices to increase school attendance and reduce the incidence of disease.
“Sustainable development can only be realized if children are healthy and are living in a safe environment. Quality education at school and at community level should pay attention to hygiene and handwashing. Good hygiene practices significantly reduce the incidence of several diseases. Something as simple as handwashing saves lives, “she said.
“We have to ensure that schools and communities are fully engaged in this process at all stages using participatory processes, local knowledge and tool. Through song and dance we can reach children and change behaviours. As a UN Special Advocate for the Sustainable Development Goals, I support UNICEF in its efforts to promote widely this life-saving practice of washing hand with soap at critical times,” she added.
UNICEF works with schools to empower children as hygiene ambassadors within their families and communities. Children are catalysts and agents for change that can encourage community members to wash their hands at critical times.
Their Majesties are in India on a State Visit from 5 to 11 November 2017. During her stay, Queen Mathilde, in her capacity as Honorary Chairperson of UNICEF Belgium, had the opportunity to witness a full range of programmes where UNICEF supports the Indian Government to achieve results for children, notably in the areas of water and hygiene, child protection, child participation and girls’ empowerment.
The visit comes ahead of the first World Children’s Day set for November 20 to mark the anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. A day for children and by children, it aims to give a voice to the voiceless and allow children from around the world to take over key roles in media, politics, business, sport and entertainment to help save children’s lives, fight for their rights and fulfil their potential.
Note to Editor: (Data for the state of Maharashtra, India)

Newborn mortality
Maharashtra has shown rapid reduction of under five mortality rates in recent times. However every year, about 48,000 children die before their fifth birthday in Maharashtra, out of which 30,000 are newborns.
Reduction of Open Defecation
Rural Maharashtra accounts for seven per cent of the national Open Defecation load.
It also ranks at the fifth position in the country among states with the highest number of rural households without individual toilets.
An estimated 21 per cent of Zilla Parishad district) schools in the rural areas of the state lack

Gambia, EU, IOM Launch Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Reintegration

pbn11092017-1

Banjul – IOM, the UN Migration Agency and the Government of The Gambia last week (03/11) officially launched the EU-IOM Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Reintegration: The Gambia at a ceremony in the capital Banjul, attended by the EU Ambassador to The Gambia, Attila Lajos and the country’s Minister of Interior, Mai Ahmed Fatty.  The launch was also attended by representatives from Government, the diplomatic community, civil society, the UN system and the media.
The three-year project is funded by the European Union Emergency Trust Fund for Africa (EUTF) for a total of EUR 3.9 million.
The initiative comes at a crucial time as a significant number of Gambians who have left the country become stranded on the migration routes to North Africa and Europe, with no means to continue their journeys. With little hope of reaching their intended destinations, many of them decide to return home but lack resources to do so.
The new project, part of a regional initiative addressing 14 countries in the Sahel and Lake Chad region as well as Libya, proposes to contribute to strengthening migration governance and to the sustainable reintegration of returning migrants in The Gambia, with the following three objectives:
To support 1,500 migrants returning to the Gambia to reintegrate into their communities of origin and to contribute to the strengthening of the Government of The Gambia’s capacity to provide sustainable reintegration support, including specialized assistance for vulnerable migrants;
To raise awareness of 250 communities and 2,500 potential migrants of safe migration options and alternatives to irregular migration;
To support national and local authorities and development partners in having access to data on migration factors, flows and trends to support evidence-based policy development and programmes.
IOM Chief of Mission in The Gambia, Fumiko Nagano, noted that the Joint initiative “aims to ensure that migrant rights are respected, that returning migrants are able to contribute positively to their communities, and that the migration process is safer and better managed. At the core, the Joint Initiative’s aim is to respond to migrant needs.”
The Joint Initiative’s inclusive approach will involve key stakeholders, such as migrants’ associations, community based organizations, and local communities to ensure the sustainability of reintegration and that Gambian migrants in the future will be opting to migrate via regular means as a matter of choice, rather than necessity.
IOM will be working very closely with the Government of The Gambia, particularly the Ministry of Interior, which has the mandate to lead on migration governance and management in the country.
In a separate but closely related event, IOM supported the government in holding the validation workshop in Banjul (02-03/11), on the country’s national migration policy, the first of its kind in The Gambia. This was part of IOM’s ongoing collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, financially supported by the EU-funded regional project, Support to Free Movement of Persons and Migration in West Africa (FMM West Africa). Once approved by the Cabinet, the policy will ensure that the Gambian Government has a comprehensive approach to migration management and governance.
“This policy is anchored on the ideals of African solidarity as well as shared values as informed by existing African Union frameworks including the AU Migration Policy Framework for Africa, the African Common Position on Migration and Development of 2006, the Common African Perspective for Valetta Summit on Migration of 2015, and Agenda 2063,” Minister Mai Fatty noted, as he urged EU and other stakeholders to act in partnership to address the root causes of irregular migration.
The FMM West Africa project, jointly funded by the European Union and the ECOWAS Commission, covers the 15 ECOWAS Member States and Mauritania on different thematic areas of migration, such as, trafficking in persons, border management, migration policy development and labour migration.
The FMM West Africa project is driven by the ECOWAS Commission and implemented jointly by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) and the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Refugees Seek Media Platform to Change Bulgarian Minds

Faced with an upsurge of hostility from Bulgarian citizens, refugees and activists want to set up a media platform that will show people what they are really like.”author”>Mariya Cheresheva

Sofia
Ahmad, Martin and their team in Sofia. Bulgaria. Photo: HITL: Human in the Loop
Ahmad left his home country of Afghanistan a year ago. Living there as a translator for NATO troops was “no longer safe” for him.
Having no legal way to enter Europe, he entered Bulgaria illegally, where he has been living ever since, and enjoying his new life.
“I just needed a safe place where I can be far away from bad people. For me, Bulgaria is a nice country – my life is much better here,” he told BIRN.
Having now obtained asylum in Bulgaria and moved away from the refugee centre in the Voenna Rampa neighbourhood of Sofia, he wants to help other refugees avoid some of the problems he faced during his first year in Bulgaria.
That is how he met Iva Gumnishka, a Bulgarian activist who works to provide job opportunities for refugees in the country.
Together, they organized a brainstorming meeting at the end of October, which brought together programmers, entrepreneurs, designers and refugees, to develop innovative solutions that could help asylum seekers cope with their new life in Bulgaria.
The idea that won most support from the participating refugees was setting up True News – a web platform to counter the negative narratives about refugees in the media and provide reliable information about the real situation in their home countries.
A team led by two Bulgarian developers, assisted by a group of Afghan refugees, has already developed a prototype for a video-sharing platform, which can be used to share clips on experiences, opinions and news among refugees and their network.
“Most people think refugees are terrorists. But most of us are just people who had wars in our countries and had to leave. We want to wipe the bad image from our faces,” Ahmad said.
A recent poll, carried out by the Sofia-based sociological research centre “Trend”, has confirmed Ahmad’s impressions about the negative attitude of most Bulgarians towards refugees.
About 84 per cent of the 1,004 participants in the poll said their country should not accept any more refugees from the Middle East.
A similar share, 82 per cent, seemed convinced that taking in economic migrants from war-torn regions was not a good idea generally.
Martin Dimitrov, one of the software developers engaged with the project, said the platform would allow asylum seekers to share information about themselves and about their life in the refugee camps, while at the same time showing Bulgarians that they are “just ordinary people”.
The original content, generated by the refugees, would then be monitored and moderated by locals responsible for the site, which would target the general public and the Bulgarian media.
“We need to find a common language. The bad reputation of refugees comes from the fact that usually it’s third parties that are the ones that talk and write about them,” Dimitrov said.
He and Iva Gumnishka believe that such a platform would have much potential and they are currently seeking additional funds and volunteer software developers to bring the idea to life.
Gumnishka acknowledged that such a project contains some risks for the refugees who take part.
“I would be afraid to open it up for comments as this would attract so much hate speech,” she said.
“I am not sure to what extent Bulgarian society is ready for this – but I still hope that the refugees will have a platform where they can express themselves,” she noted.
Ahmad, however, is positive that sharing his own experience and views with Bulgarians could bring about positive change.
“I want to show Bulgarians who am I, and what my goals and ambitions in life are,” he said. “Maybe I can be a very effective person for this community.”

Immunization is one of the most cost-effective public health interventions that currently averts an estimated two to three million deaths globally every year.  India has one of the largest immunization programmes in the world, in terms of number of beneficiaries, geographical coverage and quantities of vaccine used, with nearly 26 million newborn babies targeted for immunization each year. Over 9 million immunization sessions are held every year across the country. However, despite this extensive coverage, only 65 percent of the children in India receive all vaccines during the first year of their life.

India: An official visit by the UN expert on safe drinking water and sanitation

United Nations human rights expert, Mr. Léo Heller,  visited India from 27 October to 10 November 2017 to examine the extent to which people’s rights to safe drinking water and sanitation are being realized.
At the end of his two-week visit, the Special Rapporteur  share his preliminary observations at a press conference on Friday 10 November 2017 at 10:00 local time in the UN Conference Hall, UN House, 55 Lodi Estate, New Delhi-110003.
DSC_0900
Addressing the media in New Delhi, He categorically stated that“I will look at how human rights to water and sanitation are legally recognized and implemented in India at the national, state and local level, and how the provision of water and sanitation services adheres to human rights standards and principles,” said Léo Heller, the independent expert charged by the UN Human Rights Council to monitor, report and advise on the realization of the human rights to water and sanitation worldwide.
Replying to volley of question from the media he further explained that his study to explore the human rights to water and sanitation are well implemented in India. But when the specific question was raises by Mr Sagar. Is there any provision for the penalty to the person  responsible to stop accessibility, availability,  of free water to any person caste or community.? His  reply was, it is good question but difficult to penalize the person but name-shame is possible.
The Special Rapporteur will gather information and testimony on the availability, accessibility, affordability, acceptability and safety of drinking water and sanitation, with a particular focus on groups such as women and girls, persons with disabilities, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and those living in informal settlements and rural areas.
The human rights expert, who  visit the country at the invitation of the Government of India, met government representatives at national and local level as well as civil society and community organizations, residents in urban and rural areas, and UN officials.
He  visited the cities of Imphal, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and New Delhi, as well as urban peripheries and rural areas.
“I wanted to explore what still needs to be undertaken to ensure the human rights to water and sanitation are enjoyed by all in India,” Mr. Heller noted. Further he issued note after his mission.
End of Mission Statement by the Special Rapporteur on the human rightsto safe drinking water and sanitation Mr. Léo Heller
As the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation, I address you today at the conclusion of my official visit to India, which I undertook at the invitation of the Government from 27 October to 10 November 2017.
India is a country with historical gaps regarding the access of its population to adequate water and sanitation services. It is reported that 40 per cent of India’s population practiced open defecation in 2015, one of the highest proportions among all countries.[1] The situation of water and sanitation in the country has resulted in a disturbing impact on human health: diarrhoea-related deaths in India attributable to inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene corresponded to 40 per cent of the total number in all low and middle-income countries in 2012.[2] And, to my surprise, this situation is not explained only by the level of development of the country: the Human Development Index of India is higher than that of dozens of other countries.
In recent years, the efforts of the country in addressing these problems, mainly access to sanitation services, have been recognized as an “unprecedented commitment”.
These circumstances motivated me to undertake this visit to the country in order to identify the main obstacles hindering the full realization of the rights to safe drinking water and sanitation. Firstly, I would like to thank the Government of India for the invitation and organisation of the visit, and for the dialogues that took place. I am grateful to the central, state and local Government representatives that I met and I appreciate the spirit of openness with which I was able to engage with the authorities. During the visit, I also met with various civil society and community organisations, and residents. I would like to thank everyone who took the time to meet with me and who generously shared their personal experiences, testimonies and living conditions with me. Their contributions were vital to the success of this visit. I would also like to thank the United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office in India for facilitating the visit.
Mr. Heller will submit a full report of his findings and recommendations to the 39th session of the Human Rights Council in September 2018.

France look for stability in Lebanon.

French President Emmanuel Macron has said he will stress on the importance of stability in Lebanon. Speaking in the United Arab Emirates shortly before departing for Saudi Arabia, Mr Macron said he would emphasise the importance of Lebanese stability and integrity. He said his wish is that all Lebanese political officials live freely in Lebanon.
This comes after Lebanese PM Saad Hariri resigned on Saturday while in Riyadh, saying he feared for his life. The French President said that he had been in informal contact with Mr Hariri. Macron would hold face-to-face talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Macron also said he would discuss the crisis in Yemen with Saudi leaders, after the Saudi-led coalition shut all aid routes to the war-torn nation. The blockade was imposed on Monday after a missile was fired from Yemen at Riyadh.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia yesterday asked its citizens in Lebanon to leave the country immediately. Kuwait also issued a similar statement asking its citizens in Lebanon to leave the country.

For subsequent months, i.e. October 2017 onwards, the amount of late fee payable by a taxpayer whose tax liability for that month was ‘NIL’ will be Rs. 20/- per day (Rs. 10/- per day each under CGST & SGST Acts) instead of Rs. 200/- per day (Rs. 100/- per day each under CGST & SGST Acts).

The Second Global Migration Film Festival Gets Underway

Geneva – From Guyana in South America to Makati in the Philippines (and many other places in between) filmmakers from around the globe will soon showcase their skills as cinematographers at the Global Migration Film Festival. Organized by the UN Migration Agency, IOM and supported by UN Information Centers worldwide and with the financial support of DHL, the festival will take place in over 100 countries from 5 to 18 December 2017.
The second edition of the annual Festival will explore the challenges and promises of migration, the heterogenous journey of migrants, moving from one location to another, settling for temporary or permanent periods, in search for a better future and economic prosperity, reuniting with loved ones, or fleeing war and despair.
Films have the power to show different facets of life, through which viewers may cultivate deeper empathy for migrants and a better understanding of their realities, needs, perspectives and capacities. The objective of the Festival is to use films as educational tools that influence perceptions towards migrants bringing attention to social issues.
The opening movie of the festival in Geneva, Lost in Lebanon, delves into the news reports on the Syrian war and gives an intimate look at how four Syrians in Lebanon are trying to find ways to overcome the torment of their shattered lives.
One of the protagonists of the opening film, Mwafak, was invited to create the award statue for the Festival that will be collected and delivered by DHL, one of the partners of the Festival.
Mwafak describes the statue as “a human, female figure standing upright, portraying an optimistic gesture. The woman, stands as a symbol of harmonic life and consistent peace. She looks up to the sky, into the future. Her hair and cape wave softly in the wind. The breeze can be at the same time a challenge and her chance to fly and feel light. The material, bronze, with its warm color gives the sculpture a feeling of both strength and warmth.”
Explaining his choice for sculpting a woman, Mwafak says that “women represent hope – they are the ones who continue life as they give birth”, further adding that the women who endure the danger and strain of the migration journey are exceptionally strong and resilient.
Among others, the Festival will screen Sans Le Kosovo, in which the director and her father retrace his exile as a 19-year-old refugee from Kosovo in 1968. In Nowhere Man, a nameless refugee in Korea from Pakistan who does not appear onscreen, reminds us of all the refugees who have passed by us over the years. Over 30 movies in total will be screened worldwide.
Some of the filmmakers participating in the Festival have migrated at a certain point in their lives, and will put forth their talent, experiences and vision through movies spanning across all genres. Most of the screenings will be followed by a discussion panel consisting of filmmakers, migrants and other guests.
A committee of international film professionals and migration specialists will select three standout productions from the Emerging Filmmakers category and one standout production from the Professional Filmmakers category. Each winner will receive USD 1,500. The award ceremony will take place on 18 December in Les Cinémas du Grütli, Geneva.
The Global Migration Film Festival is not only spreading migration stories around the globe to inform, inspire, educate and transform, but it is also bringing the skills of storytelling through filmmaking, to vulnerable communities. With the support of IOM Development Fund (IDF) and Norcap, Participatory Video workshops took place in Amman, Jordan and Malakal, South Sudan.
During the five-day process, the youth groups created their own films. The participatory process empowers the participants. From the decision of the subject to the editing, every step was conducted by the group with the support of the facilitators.
The Global Migration Film Festival is a partner of Plural+, a youth-produced video festival, and the UN campaign, TOGETHER, which aims to change negative perceptions and attitudes towards refugees and migrants.

Labels promote sustainable forest management

Dear Editor Sagar,
We are delighted to share with you our results of a recent YouGov survey, highlighting the importance of labels in promoting sustainable forest management. With COP23 already underway, the role of trees and forests in addressing climate change has never been more relevant.
Kindest regards,
The PEFC International Communications Team

Labels promote sustainable forest management, consumers agree

As politicians and activists gather for the COP23 Bonn climate talks, people are wondering what they can do to help avert the climate catastrophe.
One simple action is to look out for the PEFC label on everyday products, something that 53% of all consumers already do at least sometimes, according to a recent YouGov survey.
“Forests and trees are a cornerstone of addressing climate change, as are products made of wood – if they originate from sustainably managed forests,” explains Ben Gunneberg, CEO of PEFC International.
“Consumers can easily identify such products through the PEFC label, which is exclusively available for products coming from certified, healthy forests.”

Forest certification plays a key role

Consumers agree that forest certification plays a key role in safeguarding our forests. The YouGov survey found that more than 2/3 of consumers globally believe that forest certification labels are important in promoting sustainable forest management.
PEFC, the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, is the world’s leading forest certification system. The organization sets standards for sustainable forest management.
Globally, hundreds of thousands of forest owners – smallholders, communities, public authorities and companies – have their responsible forest management practices certified to PEFC. Tens of thousands of companies around the world manufacture PEFC-certified products.

Consumers can help!

“The role of consumers in helping us protect forests through the straightforward act of opting for a PEFC-certified product cannot be underestimated,” highlights Mr. Gunneberg.
“I am excited about the fact that more than half of all consumers already do so.”
So what you can do to help? Next time you’re shopping, whether it’s for new furniture, tools for the garden, paper, or just the weekly food shop, make sure you look for the PEFC label!

“Paradise Papers” leak show

Avaaz.org – The World in Action
Dear friends,
Eight years ago as UK Prime Minister and chair of the G20, I tried to end the injustice of global tax havens. But as the “Paradise Papers” leak shows, trillions are still being siphoned off to dodge tax in the most shadowy places in the global economy.
It’s one of today’s greatest injustices, allowing the richest to stand aside while the rest of us pay for health, education, and protecting the most vulnerable.
But now we have a chance to stop it — through an international agreement that outlaws tax havens and imposes penalties and prison sentences on tax evaders. And the G20, the leaders of the world’s biggest economies, can make it happen.
Please join me in signing this open letter to Argentine President Mauricio Macri, chair of the G20 — if a million of us sign, I will personally deliver it to him, asking him and other G20 leaders to take urgent action to finish the job we began in 2009. Join with one click:
 ADD MY NAME
To President Mauricio Macri and all leaders of the G20:
The level of global inequality is appalling — 8 people own as much wealth as half the planet.
And the gap is growing, thanks in part to the shadowy world of tax havens which lets trillions be siphoned offshore from our economies. Right now, the rich get richer, and the rest of us pay.
Eight years ago the G20 agreed it would shut down these practices. It’s time to deliver. We call on you to act immediately to end tax havens and ensure that those that run and exploit them are held to account.
Nobody should be able to evade their duty to pay tax for the public good. It is your responsibility to make that so. As citizens from around the world, we demand action.
Sincerely,
ADD MY NAME

The G20 is the right home for this issue — and has already made real progress in forcing tax havens to clean up their act. So there’s already momentum, and now the Paradise Papers give us the chance we’ve been waiting for to finish the job.
As someone who was the target of Avaaz campaigns when I was Prime Minister, I can tell you that they make a powerful difference. This movement is driving forward the idealism of the world. This scandal gives us the chance to tackle one of the biggest challenges we face head-on — let’s not waste it.
With hope and determination,
Gordon Brown, with the Avaaz team

Nishant Patel and Mit Bhatt set Extreme Adventure records in India and Asia

Nishant Patel and Mit Bhatt set Extreme Adventure records in India and Asia
 Mr._Nishant_Patel_and_Mr._Mit_Bhatt__received_award_at_the_India_Book_of_Records
First Indians to set records in – Scuba Cycling Undersea & Fly to the Edge of Space respectively

Mumbai, 14th Nov 2017: Mr. Nishant Patel and Mr. Mit Bhatt have made India proud by being the first Indians to set records in Asia and India under the category of extreme adventure sports – Nishant Patel has set records with Asia Book of Records and India Book of Records as the first Asian for‘Deepest & Fastest Scuba Cycling Undersea’ and Mit Bhatt has set a National Record with Limca Book of Records and India Book of Records as the First Indian Civilian to Fly Highest & Fastest to the Edge of Space whilst Enduring Maximum G-Forces’They were both honoured with an award and certificate in the Top 100 Unique National Records recently by India Book of Records in New Delhi.
Speaking on this momentous occasion, an avid adventure sports love, Mr Nishant Patel said, “I always like to challenge myself to take the adventure to another level and I am very thankful to the two PADI certified Dive Centres in India for enabling me to achieve the unattainable. During my many practice sessions, I realised that to be able to cycle at a depth of 30m+ (100+ feet) and allow myself a safe & longer bottom time and to achieve the target would be a challenge. I would need about 20-25 minutes to cycle the 100m distance factoring in any currents, surface conditions, obstructions and atmospheric Pressure (ATM) etc., and that was bigger risk and the real challenge! But accomplishing my aim and creating this record wouldn’t have happened without the excellent guidance of the diving instructors at both the dive centres I developed and practised this adventure with and a robust cycle that required modifications to achieve this feat in the sea. You live once, you dream once, you should put efforts to make your dream a reality”
Nishant Patel has participated in many cycle races in Ladakh and has cycled on the world’s highest motor-able road in India, to cycling down most of the south on cycle. But being an adventure enthusiast he wanted to challenge himself further and hence decided to conquer some depths through ‘Scuba Cycling in the Sea’. Though he was an amateur in this field, and without any formal Scuba certification, he developed and practiced the sport undersea at 5-7m in the Andamans and decided to take on this challenge to greater depths. He became the first Asian to set a record of ‘Deepest & Fastest Scuba Cycling Undersea’ in the Bay of Bengal off Puducherry at a depth of 32.7m (107 feet) in the ocean cycling a distance of 100m in just 6 minutes 47 seconds. Nishant, besides being an avid adventurer, he is also the Founder and Trustee of Equal Street. He is also a Treasurer and event felicitator for Australian Alumni Association Mumbai Chapter (AAA, body formed under Australian Consulate to help build ties between the two countries)
Another winner of Limca books of Record & India Book of Record Holder, Mr.Mit Bhatt an adventure enthusiast took the challenge of creating the record of first Indian civilian to touch the ‘Edge of Space’. A dream for many as it is still a prerogative of fighter pilots and astronauts, but it was achieved by Mit Bhatt.  Having experienced many adventures on land, undersea and air, Mit wanted to take it to the next level by ‘Experiencing Space’. To realise his dream and create a record, Mit went to Russia to fly in a MiG-29UB Fighter Jet to reach the Stratosphere. He touched the Edge of Space at Supersonic speeds whilst enduring pulverising Gravitational forces (G-Forces) followed by Top Gun style Aerobatic Manoeuvres.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Mit Bhatt said, “It was an unforgettable experience which cannot be expressed in words to fly to the stratosphere (edge of space) and come back, though there were lots of technical and physical complications involved. During the Vertical Take-off I felt as if someone kept punching really hard on my stomach when the gravitational forces (G-forces) hit, it took the wind out of me and I felt breathless and was gasping for air for a minute. But when we reached the edge of Space, it was quite magical! We tore through the clouds at supersonic speed, the view was like a dream – a thick carpet of snow white clouds below, an electric blue horizon and the sky above getting deeper blue to black with some stars appearing in broad daylight – I felt like I am in heaven! I am glad that I took it up on myself and create this amazing record”.
In the cloudy, snowy and unsuitable weather condition, which makes even trained pilots uncomfortable, he took this ride to the edge of space in 40 mins (max allowed is 45 mins and entirely up to the person how much longer he/she can endure these G-forces) with a top speed of Mach 1.7 (approx. 2,080 kmph), altitude of 17.3km ABSL (approx. 57,000ft) enduring a G-Force range of +4G to +7G.
When Mit is not indulging in extreme adventures, he loves to travel in style which inspired him to found The Grand Vacationist with Nishant Patel and Rishabh Shah. He is also been a Management Coach & Advisor to 4-Star Generals and Squadron Commanders of the US Air Force & US Army Aviation Commands as well as Business Unit Heads of some of the top MNCs such as Delta Air Lines, L&T and BHP Billiton.
Taking their adventure streak into business, Nishant Patel and Mit Bhatthave come together to start an experiential travel start-up called ‘The Grand Vacationist’ offering customised adventure and luxury vacation solutions and have also started the country’s first formal Scuba Advisory Service called ‘Scuba Dooba Do’ for anyone who wants to start their underwater journey with the right advise or for certified divers to plan their dive travel around the world.  So people looking at a unique lifetime experience in luxury adventures can now plan their next trip with the record-making experts ‘The Grand Vacationist’!

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Henriette Ahrens, Deputy Representative – Programmes, UNICEF India said, ‘’ One very important right for children is their right to participate. We believe that children are not only the future but also a big part of the change we need to bring. They are the most influential change agents. As UNICEF Children and issues concerning them are a cornerstone for everything we do.”
“For us this occasion is symbolic to ensuring each and every child in included and his or her right fulfilled by engaging in dialogue with influencers which in this case is businesses.  We are very proud to collaborate with NSE due to their convening power of businesses and the wonderful work they have been doing as part of their CSR programmes, ” she added.
In India, there has been a lot of development over the past few years in the private sector and the role it plays in India’s development story with children being at the core of it.  The corporate sector has an impact on every aspect of society and has huge potential to be a positive force that reinforces the equity agenda, especially for children. Business makes important contributions to the well-being of children by creating jobs and livelihoods for families.  Therefore, the private sector can play a significant role in ensuring that every child in India has a fair start in life.
Mr. Vikram Limaye, MD and CEO, National Stock Exchange shared, ‘’ NSE is proud to facilitate the first of #KidsTakeOver in the world in association with UNICEF. UNICEF is celebrating the anniversary of UN convention of the Rights of the Child with kids taking over parliament, events, media, and businesses all around the world. Children will take over NSE by ringing the closing bell on November 14 which is usually rung by dignitaries and business leaders and will discuss issues of importance to them with business leaders”.
While the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child states that it is the duty of the Government to respect rights of children, businesses must do so as well.  Studies clearly indicate the impact of investment in development on GDP.  Since nutrition levels in children are linked to their cognitive abilities as well as their overall wellbeing, this reduces expenditure in health. Businesses also have an important role to play in empowering and enabling children by engaging them through various means.

Manama, Prague, Madrid, Kuala Lumpur, and Amsterdam top destinations for expats.

A great work life and the ease of getting settled make Manama, Prague, Madrid, Kuala Lumpur, and Amsterdam top destinations for expats.
  • Manama, Prague, Madrid, Kuala Lumpur, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Johannesburg, Bangkok, Basel, and Frankfurt are the best cities for expats.
  • Expats experience the best career opportunities in the world in Amsterdam, London, Beijing, Prague, and Munich.
  • About seven in ten expats living in Johannesburg, Muscat, Cape Town, Amsterdam, and Manama are happy with their social life.
Munich, 14 November 2017 — Manama takes first position out of 51 cities in this year’s Expat City Ranking. The small capital of the Arab monarchy Bahrain, as well as top-ranking Madrid (3rd) and Kuala Lumpur (4th), are highly appreciated for the ease of getting settled in these cities. Prague (2nd) rather attracts expats with its excellent work life, while Amsterdam (5th) manages to offer a good mixture of both. Other cities that offer above-average career opportunities are London, Beijing, and Munich, as the so-far unpublished Expat City Ranking 2017 reveals. The ranking is based on data collected in the annual Expat Insider survey, conducted by InterNations, the largest expat community worldwide. With nearly 13,000 respondents living and working abroad, Expat Insider 2017 is one of the most extensive expat studies worldwide. Apart from offering an in-depth analysis of expat life in 51 cities, the survey ranks them by a variety of factors from the areas quality of urban living, getting settled, urban work life, as well as finance and housing. According to all these rating factors, the top 10 cities for expats are Manama, Prague, Madrid, Kuala Lumpur, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Johannesburg, Bangkok, Basel, and Frankfurt am Main.
Top 5 Cities Make It Easy for Expats to Get Settled and Enjoy a Great Work LifeManama, Prague, Madrid, Kuala Lumpur, and Amsterdam top the list of the best cities for expats: while Prague lags behind on 35th place for getting settled, the other four cities receive good to excellent ratings in this respect. A South African expat living in Kuala Lumpur likes “the easy-going temperament and friendliness of the local people” while an expat from the Philippines appreciates the “very friendly and helpful locals” in Manama. The majority of expats rates the general friendliness towards foreign residents positively in Manama (84%), Amsterdam (83%), Kuala Lumpur (78%), and Madrid (74%), compared to a global average of 67 percent. Prague, however, performs below average here: only about half of expats living there (49%) are satisfied with this factor. Nonetheless, the capital of the Czech Republic is one of the top destinations for expats, particularly due to its outstanding ratings in terms of work: nearly seven in ten expats (68%) are satisfied with local career opportunities in Prague — 19 percentage points more than the global average.
Move to Amsterdam, London, Beijing, Prague, or Munich to Boost Your CareerThe vast majority of expats in Amsterdam (78%), London (74%), Beijing (70%), Prague (68%), and Munich (66%) rates the local career opportunities positively, compared to a global average of only 49 percent. It seems to be fairly easy to pursue a career in these cities as an above-average share of expats cite finding a job on their own as their most important reason for moving abroad. However, some of them pay a high price for their career: while the European cities manage to combine expat jobs with a satisfying work-life balance, it is all work and no play for expats in Beijing. Only about half the expats in the Chinese capital (54%) are happy with their work-life balance, compared to about seven in ten, or more, in the four European destinations. “The work-life balance and the quality of work is really great”, says a Canadian expat living in Munich, and an Australian in Prague states that their “working conditions are excellent”.
Enjoying Social Life in Johannesburg, Muscat, Cape Town, Amsterdam, and ManamaFor those who are looking for a fulfilling social life, Johannesburg, Muscat, Cape Town, Amsterdam, and Manama are the cities to keep in mind: about seven in ten expats living in these cities are happy with this aspect of life abroad. A Mauritian expat especially appreciates “the social events and places to go out to” in Amsterdam, while a British expat mentions “socializing” as one of the benefits of living in Cape Town. In all of these cities, making friends does not seem to be a problem, either. An above-average share of expats finds it easy to make new friends in Muscat (71%), Johannesburg (66%), Manama (65%), Amsterdam (56%), and Cape Town (54%). However, even though the majority of expats also finds the local residents friendly, they seem to prefer sticking together: only very few respondents in Amsterdam (8%), Cape Town (8%), and Muscat (2%) — and not a single respondent in Manama — report being mainly friends with local residents. Only in Johannesburg does this share reach the global average of 19 percent and outnumber the percentage stating that they are mainly friends with other expats (15%).

About the Expat City Ranking 2017For its annual Expat Insider survey, InterNations asked about 13,000 expatriates representing 166 nationalities and living in 188 countries or territories to provide information on various aspects of expat life, as well as their gender, age, and nationality. In 2017, the fourth year the survey was conducted, respondents were also invited to share their opinions on the city they are currently living in.
Participants were asked to rate more than 25 different aspects of urban life abroad on a scale of one to seven. The rating process emphasized the respondents’ personal satisfaction with these aspects and considered both emotional topics as well as more factual aspects with equal weight. The respondents’ ratings of the individual factors were then bundled in various combinations for a total of 13 subcategories, and their mean values were used to draw up four topical indices: Quality of Urban Living, Getting Settled, Urban Work Life, and Finance & Housing. These were further averaged in order to rank 51 cities worldwide. In 2017, the top 10 cities for expats are Manama, Prague, Madrid, Kuala Lumpur, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Johannesburg, Bangkok, Basel, and Frankfurt am Main.
For a city to be featured in the Expat City Ranking 2017, a sample size of at least 45 survey participants per city was required. In total, the responses used for the city ranking represent 7,985 expats living in 40 countries.

World Children’s Day represents the date when the most ratified treaty in the world, the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child came into being. On this occasion, UNICEF is working globally with its partners, media, parliamentarians, businesses, This Children’s Day, UNICEF is inviting children around the world to take the centre stage in a week-long activity to help save children’s lives, fight for their rights and help them fulfil their potential. From November 14 to 20, there will be a #KidsTakeOver where children will ‘take over’ high-visibility roles in media, politics, business, sport, and entertainment to shine a spotlight on the most pressing challenges faced by their generation. This is a day for children, by children, all over the world.

180 million children face bleaker prospects than their parents – UNICEF

Despite progress, 180 million children face bleaker prospects than their parents – UNICEF

World Children’s Day activities in over 130 countries to provide platform for children to speak out about their concerns; advocate for children being left behind

NEW DELHI/ NEW YORK, 20 November 2017 – Despite global progress, 1 in 12 children worldwide live in countries where their prospects today are worse than those of their parents, according to a UNICEF analysis conducted for World Children’s Day.
According to the analysis, 180 million children live in 37 countries where they are more likely to live in extreme poverty, be out of school, or be killed by violent death than children living in those countries were 20 years ago.
“While the last generation has seen vast, unprecedented gains in living standards for most of the world’s children, the fact that a forgotten minority of children have been excluded from this – through no fault of their own or those of their families – is a travesty” said Laurence Chandy, UNICEF Director of Data, Research and Policy.
UNICEF is commemorating World Children’s Day, which marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, with global children’s ‘take-overs’, high-profile events and other activations of children in over 130 countries to give children their own platform to help save children’s lives, fight for their rights and fulfil their potential.
“It is the hope of every parent, everywhere, to provide greater opportunities for their children than they themselves enjoyed when they were young. This World Children’s Day, we have to take stock of how many children are instead seeing opportunities narrow and their prospects diminish,” added Chandy.
Assessing children’s prospects in escaping extreme poverty, getting a basic education and avoiding violent deaths, the UNICEF analysis reveals that:
  • The share of people living on less than $1.90 a day has increased in 14 countries, including Benin, Cameroon, Madagascar, Zambia and Zimbabwe. This increase is mostly due to unrest, conflicts or poor governance.
  • Primary school enrolment has declined in 21 countries, including Syria and Tanzania, due to such factors as financial crises, rapid population growth and the impact of conflicts.
  • Violent deaths among children below the age of 19 have increased in seven countries: Central African Republic, Iraq, Libya, South Sudan, Syria, Ukraine and Yemen – all countries experiencing major conflicts.
  • Four countries – Central African Republic, South Sudan, Syria and Yemen – witnessed a decline across more than one of the three areas measured, while South Sudan has experienced declines across all three.
“In a time of rapid technological change leading to huge gains in living standards, it is perverse that hundreds of millions are seeing living standards actually decline, creating a sense of injustice among them and failure among those entrusted with their care,” said Chandy. “No wonder they feel their voices are unheard and their futures uncertain.”
A separate UNICEF survey of children aged 9-18 in 14 countries also released today shows that children are deeply concerned about global issues affecting their peers and them personally, including violence, terrorism, conflict, climate change, unfair treatment of refugees and migrants, and poverty.
Key findings from the survey include:
  • Half of children across all 14 countries report feeling disenfranchised when asked how they felt when decisions are made that affect children around the world.
o    Children in South Africa and the United Kingdom feel the most disenfranchised with 73 per cent and 71 per cent respectively reporting feeling that their voices are not heard at all or their opinions do not make a change anyway.
o    Children in India report feeling the most empowered with 52 per cent of children believing their voices are heard and can help their country and that their opinions can affect the future of their country.
  • Children across all 14 countries identified terrorism, poor education and poverty as the biggest issues they wanted world leaders to take action on.
  • Across all 14 countries, violence against children was the biggest concern with 67 per cent reporting worrying a lot. Children in Brazil, Nigeria, and Mexico are the most worried about violence affecting children, with 82 per cent, 77 per cent and 74 per cent respectively worrying a lot about this issue.  Children in Japan are the least likely to worry, with less than a quarter of children surveyed (23 per cent) worrying a lot.
  • Children across all 14 countries are equally concerned about terrorism and poor education with 65 per cent of all children surveyed worrying a lot about these issues. Children in Turkey and Egypt are the most likely to worry about terrorism affecting them personally, at 81 per cent and 75 per cent respectively. By contrast, children in the Netherlands are the least likely to be concerned that terrorism would affect them directly, at just 30 per cent. Children in Brazil and Nigeria are the most concerned about poor quality education or lack of access, with more than 8 in 10 children worrying about this affecting children across the world.
  • Around 4 in 10 children across all 14 countries worry a lot about the unfair treatment of refugee and migrant children across the world. Children in Mexico, Brazil and Turkey are the most likely to worry about unfair treatment of refugee and migrant children across the world, with nearly 3 in 5 Mexican children expressing fear, followed by more than half of children in Brazil and Turkey. Around 55 per cent of children in Mexico are worried this will personally affect them.
  • Nearly half of children (45 per cent) across 14 countries do not trust their adults and world leaders to make good decisions for children. Brazil has the highest proportion of children (81 per cent) who do not trust leaders, followed by South Africa at 69 per cent. Children in India have the most confidence in their leaders, with only 30 per cent not trusting.
  • Barack Obama, Cristiano Ronaldo, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift are the most popular names for children to invite to their birthday party, with the former President of the United States featuring in the top five in 9 of the 14 countries. Watching TV featured as the number one hobby of choice in 7 out of 14 of the countries.
World Children’s Day is a day ‘for children, by children’, when children from around the world will be taking over key roles in media, politics, business, sport and entertainment to express their concerns about what global leaders should be focusing on, and to voice support for the millions of their peers who are facing a less hopeful future.
“World Children’s Day is about listening to us and giving us a say in our future. And our message is clear: We need to speak up for ourselves, and when we do, the world needs to listen,” said Jaden Michael, 14-year-old activist and UNICEF child advocate.
NOTE TO EDITORS :

The game highlighted howunified sports can be an enabler in bringing children together irrespective of gender, caste or creed and how it gives all children a platform to express themselves.  An innovate platform called India ka Scoreboard which recognizes the achievements of girls was unveiled by 14-year-old Raseel Arora on this occasion. Raseel is a participant of the Global Kids Council[1] .

Digital Takeovers: Children are taking over UNICEF India social media channels (Twitter and FacebookInstagramGoogle plus). Their posts and photo with their names featured on a specially designed digital photo frame, as a profile photo on the channel.
Key findings from the India Survey include:
  • Children in India worry a lot about violence against children (70%) and poor education (70%). They sometimes worry about unfair treatment of migrant children (45%), conflict and war (39%) and natural disasters (38%)
  • Violence against children is a big concern for younger age group 9-12, where 51% of them worry about being personally affected by it
  • Indian children want world leaders to take action on Terrorism (24%), Poverty (16%), Poor Education (16%), Violence against children (10%) and Threats to nature (10%)
  • 70% of Indian children expressed trust in world leaders to make good decisions for children across the world
  • Indian children believe that their opinion is appreciated the most by their families (96%) and friends (95%)
  • Reflecting a sentiment where perhaps religion is perceived as more dictatorial then democratic, 61% of Indian children felt that their opinions were not heard or appreciated by religious leaders
  • 91% of Indian children believe the world would be a better place if world leaders listened to children’s voices

FDP pull out on trust deficit Merkel

Talks on forming a three-party coalition government in Germany have collapsed after the free-market liberal FDP pulled out. FDP leader Christian Lindner said there was no basis of trust with Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative CDU/CSU bloc and the Greens. If the FDP refuses to rejoin the talks, Ms Merkel will have to form a minority coalition or hold fresh elections. Her bloc won September’s poll, but many voters deserted the mainstream parties. After winning its first parliamentary seats, the far-right nationalist AfD (Alternative for Germany) vowed to fight “an invasion of foreigners” into the country.
Mr Lindner today said there was no progress but rather there were setbacks because targeted compromises were questioned. The parties involved in the coalition talks are reported to be deeply divided over tax, asylum and environmental policies.

Speaker Setya Novato arrested by anti corruption agency

Indonesia’s parliament speaker Setya Novanto has been taken into custody by the country’s anti-corruption agency, Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). He was arrested over his alleged role in causing state losses of 170 million US dollar linked to a national electronic identity card scheme.
Novanto was arrested on Friday night but Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said it delayed enforcing his detention while he received treatment for injuries sustained in a car crash the day before.
The KPK is investigating state losses amounting to about 170 million US dollar linked to a national electronic identity card scheme after allegations that sums ranging from 5,000 to 5.5 million US dollar generated by marking up procurement costs were divided up among politicians in parliament.

Saudi Arabia warns on Iran Hezbollah

Saudi Arabia warned that it would not stand idly in the face of Iranian aggression, as Bahrain said the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement was in total control of Lebanon. The foreign ministers of both Gulf states spoke at an extraordinary general meeting of the Arab League at its Cairo headquarters, called by Riyadh.
The Arab League meeting comes as tensions soar between regional arch-rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran, including over League member Lebanon.
Sunni Muslim powerhouse Saudi Arabia and Iran, the predominant Shiite power, have for decades stood on opposing sides of conflicts in West Asia including in Syria and Yemen.

Robert Mugabe vows to stay in power

Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe has vowed to stay in power for several weeks, despite mounting calls for him to stand down now. In a live television address, Mr Mugabe said he would preside over the ruling party’s congress in December. His party Zanu-PF sacked him as party leader yesterday, and gave him less than 24 hours to resign as president or be impeached. Officials say, Zanu-PF appointed ex-Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa as President.
Emmerson Mnangagwa had been fired by Mr Mugabe two weeks ago. The sacking of Mr Mnangagwa had prompted an extraordinary chain of events as the military intervened to block Mr Mugabe, 93, from installing his wife, Grace, in his place. The first lady has been expelled from the party altogether. His grip on power has weakened since the military intervened in a row over who should succeed him.
Crowds had gathered in Harare yesterday to watch the speech, with Mr Mugabe widely expected to resign. Instead, flanked by military generals, Mugabe said the ruling Zanu-PF party congress is due in a few weeks and he will preside over its processes. President Mugabe acknowledged criticism from Zanu-PF, the military and public, and stressed the need to return the situation in the country to normalcy.

FDP for renewed talks

Germany’s pro-business Free Democrats (FDP) on Wednesday said they would not rule out renewed talks on a three-way coalition government. Now both FDP and SPD are bidding for Merkel  hand.
Spiegel reports,German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier now faces the task of facilitating the formation of a government, preferably without having to resort to new elections. The Christian Democrats will have to decide whether Merkel will continue to lead them while the SPD has to reflect on whether they are willing to enter another alliance with the CDU and CSU and, if so, at what price. Would Merkel or Martin Schulz have to give way to make another such alliance happen?
They set a condition for Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives and the Greens to offer a “completely new package” of proposals, Reuters said. “If it really was possible to build a modern republic in the coming years, then we are the last ones who would refuse to talk,” FDP Secretary General Nicola Beer told ntv television. She added, however, that she “can’t imagine that this will work.”
Germany’s Social Democrats (SPD) faced pressure on Wednesday to consider offering coalition talks to Merkel’s conservatives. SPD leader Martin Schulz, whose party had governed in coalition under Merkel since 2013, earlier said the party would go into opposition.

30.76 Lakh Houses Sanctioned So Far Under PMAY (U)

30.76 Lakh Houses Sanctioned So Far Under PMAY (U)
15.65 Lakh Houses at Various Stages of Construction
4.13   Lakh Houses Constructed Since Mission Launch
Hardeep Singh Puri Inaugurates National Workshop on Accelerating Implementation of Urban Missions

Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of State(I/C) Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has informed that since launch of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) (U) on 25th June 2015, the Government has sanctioned a total of 30.76 lakhs houses across all verticals. Currently, 15.65 lakh houses have been grounded and are at various stages of construction and about 4.13 lakh houses have been constructed since the launch of the mission. Inaugurating the National workshop on Accelerating Implementation of Urban Missions: PMAY(Urban) and Swachh Bharat mission(Urban) here today, the Minister stated that the Urban India is undergoing a transition in terms of physical forms, demographic profile and socio-economic diversity. The important role of cities in national economic process and their global linkages demand more attention for their development, than being hitherto given. Cities are expected to perform efficiently in keeping with emerging demands for employment, commerce, trade, industry and other services.  The Housing sector is the engine of economic growth that enables and feeds into the aforementioned. It is a vital sector of the economy creating jobs and generating taxes and wages that positively influence the quality of life. The government has embarked on an ambitious plan to empower Indian citizens by 2022 that marks the 75 years of independent India, he added. Sh Durga Shankar Mishra, Secretary (HUA) and officials from several states and industry associations are attending the conference.

Addressing the day long workshop, the Minister observed that the local demand for housing is pegged at around 12 million and informed that the government has endeavored a number of measures like infrastructure status to affordable housing, direct tax benefits under Section 80-IBA of the Income Tax Act, relaxation in FDI and ECB proposals, reduction in holding period for long-term capital gain benefits and standardized usage of carpet area definition. Emphasis on reforms like stamp duty exemption and single window clearance, have been actively pursued by the Ministry.

Highlighting the progress made under PMAY (U), the Minister informed that it has made noteworthy progress over the past missions.   A closer analysis of the PMAY (U) verticals will reflect that most of the projects under the BLC and AHP verticals of the Mission have shown considerable progress. “Today’s seminar is very focused.  We have all gathered to deliberate on the bottlenecks and roadblocks that impend the progress of States/UTs with respect to the implementation of the In-situ Slum Rehabilitation (ISSR) and Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP) verticals. The ISSR vertical has had a few challenges in its implementation due to land related issues, financing models, selection of private developer, beneficiary participation and policy concerns of the States/UTs.  It is pivotal for the States/UTs to adopt a slum free approach and comprehensively develop their cities with focus on slum redevelopment taking complete advantage of the ISSR vertical” he added.  Sh Puri called on the states to ensure better outreach for Credit-linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS) and focus on convergence between the banking institutions, private sector and beneficiaries. While the AHP vertical has shown considerable progress, to further promote the AHP vertical issues such as financing models, encumbrance free land, private sector participation etc. need more focus to cater to the housing demand emerging from the EWS segment with no land ownership.

The Beneficiary-led Construction (BLC) vertical has witnessed wider implementation. The States/UTs have actively pursued this vertical which caters to individual households having own land and policy enablement has ensured to protect the interest of those households with no own land through the AHP and CLSS components.  It is crucial that we as stakeholders introspect collectively, and emerge with a robust implementation strategy to fast track achievement especially with respect to ISSR, AHP and CLSS verticals.

Dwelling on the Initiatives taken in the direction of addressing the housing demand, the Minister informed that in order to create an enabled environment this Ministry has recently launched the 8 PPP models for affordable housing along with the housing technology challenge to bring in the state of art innovations into the housing sector. The Public Private Partnership Models for Affordable Housing has been initiated in order to address some of the identified challenges and give fillip to the Mission’s objectives. It is envisaged that a sizeable and sustainable response through strategic PPP models will allow a self-propelled market to address the challenge of land availability and its high cost. The private sector participation will also enhance access to financing and capital markets, as well as reduce costs through gains in construction, operations and time-bound delivery of houses.

The Minister urged the States and UTs to actively participate, contribute and present an action-oriented approach particularly for the progress of ISSR and AHP.   The private sector, the State Government and Parastatal bodies should join hands to fast track the Mission’s objective by coming forward to invest their resources and energy in public housing.

The presentation analyses the emergence of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the context of systemic changes in the nature of political competition in Delhi. This is done against the back drop of Delhi’s unique constitutional position, party system in the state, reasons behind the emergence of AAP and subsequent reversals in its political fortunes.
The analysis is done through the detailed study of post-poll electoral surveys and the election results in 2013, 2014, and 2015 elections. The attempt here is also to look at the nomination procedure and campaign strategy adopted by APP gleaned through the extensive interviews of the political actors involved.

We ran sophisticated election campaigns

Dear amazing Avaazers,
Ever wonder what happens to the money we all donate to Avaaz? Scroll down to find out the latest!
Start with this beautiful video about the nature reserve we funded with a threatened Maasai community to protect their very existence on the land!
White Helmets
“I may not know you personally, but I could feel your spirit and my community feels your kindness.
Thank you. Asante sana!”

– Nelson Ole Reiyia, Nashulai Maasai Conservancy leader
This reserve happened because 55,000 of us took an amazing leap of hope and trust to donate to Avaaz. Many of us take this leap each year, and we are changing the world in beautiful and jaw-dropping ways!
Like the lives we just saved in Myanmar:
Myanmar refugees
Thousands of Rohingya families were trapped when the Burmese military began a massive ethnic cleansing assault on them. So over 47,000 of us paid for relief and a rescue mission, with boats working around the clock to bring them to safety in Bangladesh.
“In the midst of horrific persecution and ethnic cleansing, the Avaaz global movement’s generous response is bringing hope and help to Rohingya families!”
– Claire Gibbons, Partners Relief and Development
And it’s not just in Myanmar — Avaazers raised over 2 million dollars to help civilians trapped in Syria, funding the White Helmets, a brave volunteer rescue brigade for families trapped under the bombs.
White Helmets
And we supported conservation heroes too – helping bring hundreds of wildlife poachers to justice!!
Poachers
Over 64,500 of us funded brave undercover investigators to infiltrate poaching rings in Africa, to gather the evidence to hold them to account. And it led to 218 arrests!
“The illegal wildlife trade has pushed elephants, apes, lions and many other animals to the brink of extinction. The Avaaz global movement helped defenseless wildlife fight back, putting hundreds of traffickers and many corrupt officials behind bars.”
– Ofir Drori – EAGLE (Eco Activists for Governance and Law Enforcement)
And we’re doing amazing things in politics too — like taking the fight to the far-right wherever they are on the march! See the full story here.
EU Politics GIF
We ran sophisticated election campaigns to stop the far-right taking power in France and across Europe, and organised massive rallies for tolerance in the Netherlands and Germany.
And that’s just scratching the surface — here’s a couple more examples of what we’ve done together this year:
We’ve got Monsanto on the run.
When scientists linked Monsanto’s biggest pesticide with cancer, we were THE driving force behind a global campaign for a ban. 50,000 of us donated to power a hard-hitting media and advertising campaign — and Europe is now on the cusp of a glyphosate ban!
Glyphosate
And we funded a global seedbank to fight back against chemical agriculture! Now any farmer anywhere can source a wide variety of plants for free, giving them an alternative to genetically modified seeds.
Seed Bank
We powered a network providing safe houses and support to help gay people escape Chechnya’s crackdown. When reports emerged of gay people being dragged off to torture camps, we funded groups on the ground organizing rescues and protection.
Safehouses
Plus we’ve taken journalists into war zones, funded scienctific studies to save bees, and paid for education for Syrian refugees.
Our gifts funded all of this to happen in 2017, ON TOP of the hundreds of online and offline campaigns for a better world that land in our inboxes every week! Over the years we’ve become incredibly effective on each and every one of these campaigns. That story is for another email 🙂
But it’s not just the money we raise. It’s HOW we raise it that makes Avaaz such a powerful force for good in the world. Here’s four things that make us special:
  1. Avaaz members are in charge – we don’t take money (ever!) from government, foundations, corporations or large donors. Only our members are in charge of Avaaz, meaning we can fund high-impact work that is too risky for others, like our undercover wildlife stings!
  2. We get political to get things done — Our donations are not tax deductible — so we can get involved in politics, like campaigning in elections to help hope defeat hate.
  3. We’re lightning fast — We can raise a million dollars in hours, and spend it straight away, helping us save lives in places like Myanmar and Syria with hardly any bureaucratic delays.
  4. We give away millions — When a great idea to change the world needs funding, we make it happen. We’ve given away over 24 million dollars to those best placed to help us win — from funding scientific studies to buying a rainforest for orangutans.
Donations Pie Chart
Some people worry that the nonprofit sector can be wasteful and slow. But Avaaz moves at lightning speed. Our movement has won awards for its effectiveness, and our campaigns are held up all over the world as shining examples of people power in action.
When Nelson first shared his vision with the Avaaz team, of that Maasai-managed nature reserve — we knew right away that Avaazers would love it. Not just because brilliant ideas like these are infectious, but because the optimism and solidarity and generosity of this community is one truly remarkable constant in these crazy times.
Thank you, so much, to everyone in this movement, for being who you are, and doing what you do.
With respect and gratitude,
Ricken and the whole Avaaz team
PS. Let others know about the everyday magic the Avaaz community makes – share the video report back here!

Lithuanian parliament Russians to its ‘Magnitsky list’

The parliament of Lithuania, or the Seimas, has overwhelmingly adopted a resolution adding the names of 44 Russian citizens to its version of the ‘Magnitsky List.’ The Lithuanian Seimas, on November 16, unanimously adopted a bill similar to the US Magnitsky Act, which imposes sanctions on Russian officials. The officials named in the Lithuanian act include Alexandr Bastrykin, the former Chairman of The Investigative Committee of the Prosecutor General’s Office, along with judges Elena Stashina, Alexey Krivoruchko and Svetlana Ukhnaleva. 83 MPs voted for the new resolution, and only one abstained.

A World of Three Zeros: The New Economics of Zero Poverty, Zero Unemployment, Zero Net Carbon

Brookings India organised a private discussion with Muhammad Yunus on his new book A World of Three Zeros: The New Economics of Zero Poverty, Zero Unemployment, Zero Net Carbon Emissions, chaired by Brookings India Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta.
Muhammad Yunus is a Bangladeshi social entrepreneur, banker, economist, and civil society leader who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for founding the Grameen Bank and pioneering the concepts of microcredit and microfinance. Yunus chairs the Yunus Centre in Dhaka, Bangladesh, a think tank for issues related to social business, working in the field of poverty alleviation and sustainability. The Yunus Centre focusses especially on social business.
In his new book, Muhammad Yunus offers his vision of an emerging new economic system that can save humankind and the planet. In the book Yunus declares it’s time to admit that the capitalist engine is broken, that in its current form it inevitably leads to rampant inequality, massive unemployment, and environmental destruction. A new economic system is needed that will unleash altruism as a creative force just as powerful as self-interest.
Key takeaways from the discussion were:
  1. Innovations in technology can have an impact in reducing inequality, however, innovators sometimes fail to grasp the total impact of their innovations leading to inequality. For example, Artificial Intelligence can make healthcare more affordable, but is instead being used to replace jobs.
  2. Businesses need not all be about making money, but also provide solutions to people’s problems. There is an increasing number of businesses interested in the development of social businesses.
  3. Innovations such as cryptocurrency and community finance have the possibility of helping unemployed youth identify new endeavours.
  4. Poverty is created by deficiencies in the system and not by the poor.

Nobel literature academy shaken by #MeToo sex scandal wave

The Swedish Academy, which awards the Nobel Literature Prize, has been rattled by a sex scandal as several members, their wives and daughters accused an influential person with close ties to the prestigious institution of assault.
The #MeToo wave exposing sexual misconduct which began in Hollywood has shaken artistic, media and political circles in Sweden, one of the most gender equal countries in the world, as thousands of women have spoken up and campaigned against harassment.
Sweden´s prestigious literary scene was drawn into the fray on Tuesday when newspaper of reference Dagens Nyheter published the testimony of 18 women claiming to have been assaulted or raped by one of the most influential figures in Stockholm´s cultural scene.
The accused man´s name has not been published in the media due to Swedish laws on the presumption of innocence. But his identity is generally known by the public as he is a high-profile person in cultural circles and his name has appeared in online chat forums discussing the issue.
The man did not respond to AFP´s request for a comment, though he told Dagens Nyheter he was innocent.
Married to a writer with “close links to the Swedish Academy”, the man runs a cultural club showcasing exhibitions, readings and performances by both the cultural elite and hopefuls — including Nobel literature laureates — and dubbed by some as “the Academy´s living room”.The club was partly funded by the Academy.
The alleged sexual assaults occurred between 1996 and 2017, some of them in the club´s premises, according to Dagens Nyheter.
Several women spoke openly, allowing the newspaper to reveal their identities, and their stories were corroborated by eyewitnesses, the paper said.
One of them claims to have been raped in an apartment in a posh Stockholm neighbourhood.
“Everyone knows and everyone has always known,” that he was attacking young women, she says.
The women said they remained silent out of fear of jeopardising their careers because of the man´s connections and close relations with leading publishers, producers, directors and composers.
After a “crisis meeting” on Thursday evening, the Swedish Academy announced that it was cutting all ties with the accused, whom it had funded and allowed to manage an apartment it owns in an upscale Paris neighbourhood.
The Academy said in a statement that during the meeting, “it emerged that members of the Academy, daughters of Academy members, wives of Academy members and staff of the Academy have experienced unwanted intimacy or inappropriate behaviour” by the man.
The prominent institution said it would launch an internal inquiry to find out if the man “has had any direct or indirect influence on the Academy´s prizes, scholarships, and fundings of any kind”.
Culture Minister Alice Bah Kuhnke said she regretted honouring him with the 2015 Order of The Polar Star, awarded to members of the Swedish royal family and foreigners for services to Sweden.

News channels and social media remained suspended in Pakistan on Sunday after being shut down by the government a day earlier.

Prior to this decision, PEMRA had directed news channels to ensure the security of their staff while the situation persisted; in light of which, Geo News as per its tradition of responsible reporting was and continues to abide by the rules.
Earlier, PEMRA had barred media from live coverage of Islamabad operation under Media Code of Conduct 2015.

Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are also not accessible in Pakistan, while YouTube can only be accessed via the mobile application. Access has also been blocked to the live stream pages of major news channels in Pakistan.

The protesters began pelting stones at policemen and set fire to five motorcycles and a car belonging to the police near I-8 sector earlier today, police said.

Shamim Khan lift second IndianOil SERVO Masters Golf title

Shamim Khan weathers the storm, beats young Veer Ahlawat in playoff to lift second IndianOil SERVO Masters Golf title
Shamim narrows gap with Order of Merit leader Udayan Mane
Digboi, Assam, November 25, 2017: The experienced Shamim Khan weathered the storm called Veer Ahlawat to register his second win at the IndianOil SERVO Masters Golf on Saturday.
The 39-year-old Shamim came through in a playoff against the 21-year-old Veer after both the Delhi-based professionals ended the regulation 72 holes with identical scores of nine-under-279 at the tranquil Digboi Golf Links. It was Khan’s third title of the season and his 15th overall.
Khan took home the winner’s cheque of Rs. 6 lakh from the Rs. 40 lakh event and continued in second place on the PGTI Order of Merit. However, with Shamim’s season earnings moving to Rs. 35,58,250, he has now narrowed the gap between himself and the money list leader Udayan Mane to just Rs. 1 lakh.
Shamim Khan (72-66-71-70), the overnight joint leader, looked in control when he sank his second birdie of the day, a 35-footer on the fifth, which gave him a two-shot lead. But there was a twist when Veer Ahlawat (71-70-69-69), who was overnight tied third and one off the lead, produced birdies on the sixth, seventh and ninth while Shamim dropped a bogey on the eighth.
After nine holes, Veer, playing one group ahead of the leaders, drew level with Shamim to emerge as a top contender. Ahlawat, playing only his second season as a professional, finally took the sole lead when he drove the 12th green to set up a birdie. Veer, who plays at the DLF Golf & Country Club, Gurgaon, dropped a shot on the 13th but regained his outright lead with a brilliant chip-putt birdie on the 15th.
Ahlawat then missed a few chances to seal his maiden title, notably an up and down for par on the 18th. The match went into a playoff as Khan made pars on his last 10 holes which included a crucial five feet conversion on the 18th.
Veer hit the green while Shamim was in the bunker after two shots each during the playoff on the par-4 18th. Khan managed to turn the tables with a gem of a bunker shot that set up a tap-in for par. The six-foot-three-inch tall Ahlawat, on the other hand, three-putted from 20 feet for a bogey that gave Shamim his 13th PGTI title.
Shamim, who previously won in Digboi in 2014, said, “My putting wasn’t great for the second consecutive day and when I missed a two-footer for par on the eighth, I knew I was in trouble.
“However, I hung in there with pars all the way till the end. I was quite happy to take it into the playoff after having trailed Veer on the back-nine. In a playoff situation, experience always counts. That’s what saw me through at the end. I felt Veer tried a bit too hard during the playoff.
“The birdies were hard to come by on the last two days but my chipping average was excellent. I landed all my chips within a short distance of the pins. The win puts me in a good position to once again contend for the Order of Merit crown,” added Khan, the 2012 PGTI Order of Merit champion.
Veer Ahlawat, who came close to causing a major upset on Saturday, jumped 14 spots to 16thposition in the Order of Merit as a result of his career-best runner-up finish.
Ahlawat said, “The four birdies on the first 12 holes really got my confidence going. I checked the leaderboard on the 15th and that’s when I realized that I was very close to victory.
“I knew Shamim will not be easy to beat but I was quite confident as I was hitting and putting really well. I just couldn’t end it well. I didn’t feel much pressure but I think I got a little excited.
“But I’m quite happy with this performance as it is my best finish as a professional. I feel I’m now coming into my own after an ordinary rookie season on the PGTI last year. Every aspect of my game is better this year.”
Manu Gandas of Gurgaon, another 21-year-old, fired a final round of 71 to take third place at seven-under-281.
Bangladesh’s Md Zamal Hossain Mollah struck a 67, the best score of the last round, to end up in tied fourth at five-under-283 along with Noida’s Rahul Bajaj (71).
Bengaluru’s M Dharma, the joint leader from round three, slipped to tied 10th at two-under-286 after a fourth round of 77.
Digboi’s Dulal Kalowar (76-74-76-77), the only local player to make the cut, shot a 77 on Saturday to end the week in tied 47th at 15-over-303.

Relatives mourn missing Argentine submarine crew, frantic search on

Ten days after the missing Argentine submarine San Juan went silent, grieving relatives have begun mourning the loss of its 44 missing crew members with a religious ceremony Saturday, even though the navy has yet to declare them dead.
A religious service is set to be held outside the Mar del Plata naval base, where the submarine was based, to support grieving friends and relatives.
The navy has refused to say there is no chance of finding survivors.
But many relatives of the crew have lost hope since the navy announced Thursday that there had been an explosion on board the submarine, which experts said was likely linked to a problem with its batteries and would likely have been catastrophic.
A handful of relatives held out hope that at least some of the sailors aboard the 34-year-old submarine, which had recently been retrofitted, could be found alive.
The frantic search for the San Juan “will continue day and night with help from 13 countries,” navy spokesman Captain Enrique Balbi said late Friday.
Hopes were boosted by the arrival later in the day of a giant Russian Antonov transport plane bringing an underwater robot that can scour the ocean at a depth of 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) below the surface.
Separately, an army of welders worked frantically to create an opening in the stern of the Norwegian offshore supply ship Sophie Siem, owned by the Total oil company, large enough to accomodate an underwater rescue capsule sent by the US navy.
The US capsule can sink to a depth of 200 meters (660 feet) and rescue up to 16 trapped submarine sailors at a time in shifts of 20 minutes, experts said.
Depths plummet from 200 meters (650 feet) to more than 3,000 meters on the edge of the Argentine shelf.
Experts say the sub would begin to break-up once below depths of around 600 meters due to the water pressure.
President Mauricio Macri on Friday ordered an inquiry to “know the truth” about what happened to the San Juan.
The submarine and was “in perfect condition,” Macri told reporters at the Argentine navy headquarters.
“My commitment is with the truth,” he said, adding the tragedy “will require a serious, in-depth investigation that will yield certainty about what has happened.”
Argentina´s navy has been fiercely criticised for its handling of the operation since first reporting on November 16 that the San Juan had not returned to base as scheduled.
“Until we have the complete information, we do not have to look for the guilty, to look for those responsible. First we have to have certainty of what happened and why it happened,” said Macri.
Magistrate Marta Yanez has already begun preliminary investigations into the disaster.
She told reporters that unlike a plane, “the submarine does not have a black box. The black box is the submarine,” and it would have to be recovered before the causes of the explosion could be known.

Mount Agung in Bali erupts

Updated Sunday :
Mount Agung volcano in Bali, the resort island of Indonesia, continued powerful eruptions on Sunday with a column of ash spread by up to four km high, forcing authorities to ban flight in the territory, an official of disaster agency said.
The volcano erupted three times on Sunday morning with the latest eruption spewing the highest height of ash, four km, at 06:20 a.m. local time, spokesman of national disaster management agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.
The previous two eruptions on Sunday spread ash by up to 3,000 meters and 2,000 meters high, he added.
The volcanic ash spreads to the east and southeast of the crater, heading to nearby Lombok, a tourism resort in Flores island, the spokesman said.
Planes were banned from flying above the territory as the center of volcanology and geological hazard mitigation (PVMBG) has risen volcano observatory notice for aviation to the highest level, said the official.
Indonesia, Mount Agung in Bali erupted for the second time on Saturday spewing grey volcanic ash as high as 1,500 metres from the crater, disrupting international flights.
The National Disaster Migitation Agency, in a statement, said, there has not been any increase in tremors and volcanic activities since the eruption.
The agency has called for calm among the local community, from which around 25,000 people have been evacuated from the slopes of Agung to hundreds of refuge shelters.
Mount Agung erupted for the first time in 54 years last Tuesday. Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency says the 3014-meter volcano erupted again at around 5:30 PM on Saturday. The agency says the eruption was minor, and a plume of ash rose up to a height of about 1,500 meters.
Government officials say they are not changing the volcano’s alert level from 3, the second highest.
16 international flights were cancelled on Saturday, affecting the country’s tourism industry. They include flights operated by an Australian airliner. Australians top the list of visitors to the island.

Chinese premier leaves for Hungary

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang left Beijing on Sunday morning for an official visit to Hungary and the sixth meeting of heads of government of China-Central and Eastern European Countries in Budapest.
Li made the statement in an article published on the newspaper The Hungarian Times before attending the sixth meeting of heads of government of China and the CEEC on Nov. 26-29 in Budapest and paying an official visit to Hungary.
The premier recalled that the first China-CEEC economic and trade forum was held in Budapest in 2011 and, a year later, the 17 countries established a new trans-regional cooperation platform, called the 16+1 cooperation.
Over the five years, the 16+1 cooperation has been growing and the mechanism improving, bringing about remarkable progress to cooperation in all fields, Li said.
A trade hub established by a Chinese enterprise in Hungary has been acting as a “matchmaker” between Chinese and European businesses, and is poised to further facilitate bilateral trade cooperation as the Belt and Road Initiative continues to unfold, the company’s CEO has said.
The hub, formally known as the Central European Trade and Logistics Cooperation Zone, currently comprises an exhibition center in Budapest, and two logistic parks respectively in the Csepel Port in Hungary and the Bremen Port in Germany, Wu Jiang told Xinhua in a recent interview.
The Chinese businessman, with over 20 years of experience in commerce and logistics in Hungary, said his motive to start the trade service company was to help Chinese enterprises find competent local partners in their exploration for new markets in Europe.
“I have noticed that many Chinese enterprises, often unfamiliar with local languages and laws, spent most of their energy dealing with accountants, lawyers and government agencies when they came here, with only limited time spent on expanding actual business. They could stay for only a year or two, without achieving much breakthrough in business and had to call off their endeavor,” said Wu.
He compared his exhibition center in Budapest as a bridge linking Chinese enterprises with local partners.
Activities at the center, such as exhibitions and bushiness presentations, allow the two sides to find suitable partners in a more efficient way, he said.
Meanwhile, the logistics park in the Csepel Port provides services such as cargo distribution, customs clearance and warehousing, among others, according to Wu.
In the past, the goods used to flow southeastward from the base ports of northwestern Europe such as Hamburg, Bremen and Rotterdam, he noted. With the Chinese Railway Express cargo trains and China-Europe land-sea express coming into operation, the trend is that the goods go from the southeast to the northwest, Wu added.
The China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative has brought tangible benefits for businesses in Hungary, noted Wu. “The logistics volume in the park and the whole country has grown very rapidly this year. Our truck fleet is running at its maximum capacity and we have to rent trucks to cope with the trade flow,” he said.

Two crew members left the ARA ‘San Juan’ before disappearing

Two crew members left the ARA ‘San Juan’ days before the Argentine Navy’s submarine disappeared off the radar in the South Atlantic, spokesman Enrique Balbi said Saturday as cited by media. “45 people boarded the submarine in Mar-del-Plata, but one left in Ushuaia for personal reasons, because of his mother’s illness,” Balbi said, adding that another sailor was replaced after leaving in Ushuaia. A total of 44 crew members have been missing since November 15, as the search operation continues.

PEMRA bans News channels,Facebook, Twitter and Instagram not accessible in Pakistan

News channels and social media remained suspended in Pakistan on Sunday after being shut down by the government a day earlier.
Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on Saturday and ordered to take all news channels off air.
In a press release, the Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) strongly condemned the unilateral closure of news channels by the government. The All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) expressed concern over the sudden closure of television channels and their transmission
Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are also not accessible in Pakistan, while YouTube can only be accessed via the mobile application. Access has also been blocked to the live stream pages of major news channels in Pakistan.
Protesters renewed violence early Sunday morning as they resorted to arson and pelted stones at police, a day after authorities commenced an operation to clear Faizabad Interchange of the sit-in that had paralysed the federal capital for weeks.
The protesters began pelting stones at policemen and set fire to five motorcycles and a car belonging to the police near I-8 sector earlier today, police said.
On Saturday, a protester was killed while over 250 people including 90 policemen and FC personnel, as protests took a violent turn in the capital. Around 8,000 security officials took part in the operation aimed at dispersing the protesters with the help of tear gas and water cannons.

There is 200 GW of Hydro Power Potential in Himalayas from J&K to Arunachal and 200 GW in Brahmputra Bend. Supaul district home town of the Minister is IMPACTED by floods every year – 40% UP & Bihar are Impacted by FLOODS originating in Nepal. Green Energy India Can AVOID 3.0 B.Tones of GHG Annually
September11, 2014 (C) Ravinder Singh ravinderinvent@gmail.com
India’s Energy Policy is loaded entirely in favor of Costliest and Most Polluting Coal based power. Even the latest Super Critical Thermal Plants are not effective mainly because such units are located in hot regions, high ambient air and circulating water temperature and shortage of water adds up to much lower thermal efficiency and in addition there are substantial Transmission & Distribution losses. Use of low quality coal releases around 200 million tones of Fly Ash at power stations, partly in air also.
Business As Usual situation may consume 2000 million tone of Coal every year producing over 800 million tones of Fly Ash at power stations including 160 million tones released in air by 2030.
Thus Indian power is Costliest and Most Polluting due to extensive use of thermal coal for power generation.
Green Energy Programs to Avoid 3.0 Billion Tones of CO2 by 2030 are: –
1.]  India should be developing 200,000 MW of Multipurpose Hydro Power+, producing 800m Units of Electricity and avoiding 0.8 Billion Tones of CO2 every year and around 40 tones of Fly Ash emissions in air.
+ Additionally Prevent or Moderate Floods in 40 million hectares of flood affected land and supply 500 BCM of addition Clean Blue Water for Irrigation, Municipal other uses, reduce water pumping for irrigation etc.
2.]  100,000 MWe of Nuclear Power shall produce around 750 BU of green electricity avoiding 750 million tones of CO2.
3.]  200,000 MWp Solar Power with Tracking shall generate 450 BU of green electricity to be ready by 2020.
4.]  Energy Efficiency 500 BU Annually by 2030 avoiding 500 million tones of CO2 every year.
5.]  Wind, Biomass, Tidal, Bio-Fuels together shall produce 200 BU of electricity or 200m avoid Tones of CO2.
6.]  Electric Transport like Railways, Electric Vehicles, Trams etc shall avoid 300m of CO2 in replacing petroleum.

All these programs are Commercially Viable and produce Cheaper Electricity than by polluting Coal Based power require just $2.5 Trillion investments including T&D. India shall Lead The World in Saving Planet Earth From Impact Of GHG on Climate Change.
Electro Mobility – $Trillion World Tech-Leadership Opportunity November25, 2017 (C)Ravinder Singh progressindia2015@gmail.com
Quest event on Electro Mobility was well organized but was mainly focused on Li-Ion Battery and Charger technologies – both are not the primary mobility technologies.
Electro Mobility for India is $Trillion World Leadership Opportunity
In 2011 at one IPR event I told RIL R&D head ‘Your Company Has So Much Cash that You Can Promote 100,000 Technologies and Could Become first $Trillion Company in the world.’

RIL engaged RA Mashelkar who Misled CSIR for many years, had $10b annual budget couldn’t develop a Single Commercial Technology – in last 6 years is largely a FRAUD.
Rahul Bajaj led Opposition to ‘India joining PCT’ is reduced to9% of 2-Wheelers Sold from 70% – 5% in Value, may be reduced to 1% if it doesn’t Switch to Electro Mobility.
RIL invested heavily on RJIO also – since acquiring 4G license in 2010 money has gone out of RIL Accounts so far – may not be profitable for many more years.

Siting through the event I recalled my ‘Electro Mobility Ideas’over last 45 years, since introduced to Steam, Diesel & Electric Locos, travelled in Locos during education tour – realized myMobility Ideas alone could be $Trillion Opportunity for India and exports.
Li-Ion Battery cost in wholesale has reduced to just $40/Kwh and weight reduced to 1kg/Kwh. Last time I purchased a Lead Acid Battery it cost $60/Kwh weigh 20 kg.
Both Li-Ion & Lead Acid Batteries Cost almost Same, Compete with each other and both can improve Performance & Reduce cost. In recent times Price of Lithium metal increased three fold while price of lead has reduced. Recycling of Lead Acid batteries is over 70% – Lithium yet to begin. For stationary ‘Energy Storage’ applications and short distance – Lead Acid batteries shall prevail for a long time.

Opposition from Power Generators & Distributers

Ø Off-grid Solar can charge cars and two wheelers practically free or less than Rs.1 Per kwh or Unit – NTPC & NDPL offered Electricity for Charging at Rs.5 & Rs.5:50/U. Charging stations in Rural-Urban areas may retail energy at Rs.8 to Rs.10/Unit.
Ø NTPC estimated only 7m Electric Vehicles to be on Road in India by 2030 & projected 15 BU demand, when it could be 50-100 times or over 80% Vehicles. Energy required for Electro-Mobility shall exceed 200 BU – mostly cheap SolarPV.
Ø NTPC was right in stating that charging Electric Vehicles at night would come from Coal Fired unit – but most vehicles except public transport operate for 0.5-2 hours a day would be plugged to charging stations in day time as well.

Switch to 100% Electric Railways is Switch to Coal Power

Ø Above valid for Railways – Switch to 100% Electrification to cost Rs.50,000 Cr on new Locos – 25,000 MW of new Connected Load, 10,000 MW of Peaking Power to
cost over Rs.1,00,000 Crores – Rs.1,50,000 Crores on Coal Power Switch.
Ø Diesel Locos can be ‘ENGAGED IN STARTING-EXTRA PULL’ than discarded.
Ø There are OPERATIONAL Improvements opportunities in Railways.
Ø India should promote 200,000 MW Multi-Purpose Hydro Power.

In Conclusion

ü Farmers May Put Up 1 MW SolarPV Generators – Charge Batteries FREE for Purchase of Fast Food – Rs.100 for 2-Wheelers and Rs.500 for Cars or Four Wheelers.

Greece backs India’s bid for permanent membership in UNSC

Greece today advocated reforms in the United Nations and backed India’s bid for permanent membership in the Security Council, asserting that New Delhi “cannot be kept out” of one of the most important world bodies.
Foreign Affairs Minister of Greece Nikos Kotzias said in New Delhi today that his country fully supports India for the membership of the UNSC as a new balance of power is emerging in the world.
The minister noted that the old powers are declining while a new balance of power is emerging with countries such as India and China.
He was responding to a question after delivering a lecture on “Greece as a pillar of stability in Southeastern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean”, an event organised by the Observer Foundation Research and the Embassy of Greece.
The minister said Greece and India could play specific role in stabilisation of the West Asia and also the eastern Mediterranean region.

Bali volcano get voltile

Transport authorities in Indonesia extended closure of the international Ngurah Rai airport on Tuesday as volcanic eruption on Bali resort island continued, officials said.
Bali airport closure extended for another dayNHK photo
The shutdown of Ngurah Rai airport was extended to 7:00 a.m. local time (0100 GMT) Wednesday from 7:00 a.m. (0100 GMT) Tuesday, said Wisnu Darjono, director operation of airNav Indonesia, a firm carrying out navigation services.
The decision came as Mount Agung volcano in Karangasem district of Bali continued eruption on Monday evening, spewing ash by up to 3 km high.
“After the eruption last night, it was decided to prolong the closure,” he said in a statement.
The director said volcanic ash advisory shows that the navigation pathway has been covered by volcanic ash.
“So this is dangerous for flight. This decision is taken for the safety of flight,” said Darjono.
A total of 89,000 passengers have been stranded in Bali as a result of closure of the airport.
Separately, in nearby Lombok area, another major foreign tourist destination in the country, the main airport has been reopened since 6:00 a.m. Tuesday (0000 GMT), said Israwadi, corporate secretary of PT Angkasa Pura I, operator of the airport.
The airport was shut down at 19:50 p.m. local time (1350) Monday.
The Lombok International airport has been made as an alternate airport when the Bali Ngurah Rai airport could not operate.
Over 200,000 foreign holiday makers come into the Bali tourist resort every month, according to the national statistics agency.
Indonesia closed the airport on the tourist island of Bali on Monday and ordered 100,000 residents living near a grumbling volcano spewing columns of ash to evacuate immediately, warning that the first major eruption in 54 years could be “imminent”.
The airport was closed for 24 hours from Monday morning, disrupting 445 flights and some 59,000 passengers, after Mount Agung, which killed hundreds of people in 1963, sent volcanic ash high into the sky, and officials said cancellations could be extended.
“Plumes of smoke are occasionally accompanied by explosive eruptions and the sound of weak blasts that can be heard up to 12 km (7 miles) from the peak,” the Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said in a statement after raising the alert from three to its highest level of four.
“The potential for a larger eruption is imminent,” it said, referring to a visible glow of magma at Mount Agung’s peak overnight, and warning residents to evacuate a danger zone at a radius of 8-10 km (5-6 miles).
Sutopo, a BNPB spokesman, said there had been no casualties so far and 40,000 people had left the area, but tens of thousands still needed to move.
Video footage shared by the agency showed volcanic mud flows (lahar) on the mountainside. Lahar carrying mud and large boulders can destroy houses, bridges and roads in its path.
Bali, famous for its surf, beaches and temples, attracted nearly 5 million visitors last year, and its airport serves as a transport hub for the chain of islands in Indonesia’s eastern archipelago.
But tourism has slumped in parts of Bali since September when Agung’s volcanic tremors began to increase and the alert level was raised to maximum before being lowered in October when seismic activity calmed.“I‘m really worried. Maybe I’ll go somewhere south that I think will be safe to avoid being trapped by the ashfall,” said Maria Becker, a German tourist staying in Amed, around 15 km (9 miles) from the volcano.
Agung rises majestically over eastern Bali to a height of just over 3,000 metres (9,800 feet). Northeastern Bali is relatively undeveloped compared to the more heavily populated southern tourist hub of Kuta-Seminyak-Nusa Dua.
Indonesia’s Vulcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre (PVMBG), which is using drones, satellite imagery and other equipment, said predictions were difficult in the absence of instrumental recordings from the last eruption 54 years ago.
In 1963, an eruption of Agung killed more than 1,000 people and razed several villages by hurling out pyroclastic material, hot ash, lava and lahar.
Recordings now show the northeast area of Agung’s peak has swollen in recent weeks “indicating there is fairly strong pressure toward the surface”, PVMBG said.
It warned that if a similar eruption occurred, it could send rocks bigger than fist-size up to 8 km (5 miles) from the summit and volcanic gas to a distance of 10 km (6 miles) within three minutes.
Some analysis, however, suggests the threat should not be as great this time because “energy at Mount Agung’s magma chamber is not as big” and the ash column only around a quarter as high so far as the 20 km (12 miles) reached in 1963, Sutopo said.
Bali airport, about 60 km (37 miles) from the volcano, will be closed for 24 hours, its operator said.Ten alternative airports have been prepared for airlines to divert inbound flights, including in neighboring provinces. Virgin Australia Holdings Ltd said it was cancelling flights on Tuesday, while Jetstar was offering to exchange Bali bound tickets for other destinations.
Television footage showed hundreds of holidaymakers camped inside the airport terminal, some sleeping on their bags, others using mobile telephones.
“We have been here (in Bali) for three days we are about to leave today, but just found out our flights have been cancelled. We have got no information because the gates, the check-ins, have been closed indefinitely,” said Carlo Oben from Los Angeles.
Cover-More, Australia’s biggest travel insurer, said on its website customers would only be covered if they had bought policies before the volcano alert was first issued on Sept. 18.
Indonesia’s hotel and restaurant association said stranded tourists at member hotels would get one night’s free stay.
The main airport on Lombok, next to Bali, was closed after being open for much of the day, a spokesman said.
Airlines avoid flying when volcanic ash is present because it can damage engines and can clog fuel and cooling systems and hamper visibility.
